DETROIT LAKES, MN--Tired swimmers abandoned by their boat in windy waters Saturday night on Little Detroit Lake ended up at the Detroit Lakes hospital. The Becker County Sheriff's Office Boat and Water Patrol received a call just before 7:45pm about an abandoned boat afloat on Little Detroit Lake south of the Holiday Haven Motel. Becker County Boat and Water Deputies were across the lake on Big Detroit Lake near Long Bridge at the time of the call and responded to the report. As they responded a report of of possibly two injured people between J&K Marina and Holiday Haven Motel as called into dispatch. Deputies located a woman struggling in the water about 200 yards from shore. As they were pulling the woman from the water, the deputies were notified a male had been found by a group in a pontoon and they were holding onto him as they were unable to pull him onto the pontoon. The individuals were identified as 51 year old Jay Weist and 50 year old Tracey Powell both of Fargo. The two were transported to St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes by ambulance and treated for non life-threatening conditions. Sheriff Todd Glander says further investigation indicated that Weist and Powell had left the boat for a swim when the boat floated away from them due to windy conditions. As they attempted to get to the boat, both became exhausted and separated. The sheriff says neither was wearing a life jacket.
