DETROIT LAKES, MN—April
is Sexual Assault Awareness month and Becker County agencies announce the
formation of a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and the first public event
to bring awareness to sexual assault and abuse.
The Becker County Offices of Sheriff and County Attorney, and Detroit Lakes Police Department, as well as other social service agencies have joined the Lakes Crisis and Resource Center to unite as SART to focus on this serious issue which affects one in four girls and one in six boys who will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old.
Lakes Crisis Center's Leona Ullrich says the local agencies with SART have worked over the last couple of months to come together for better services the county can provide to victims of sexual abouse and increase opportunities for prosecution and holding offenders accountable.
Leona says one of SART’s first actions is to host a community-wide event to bring greater awareness and sponsored by SART is the free viewing of an award-winning documentary, Roll Red Roll, at M-State in Detroit Lakes on April 30th. The showing starts at 6:30pm. Leona says because of the nature of the documentary it's recommended for ages 13 and up.
