(KDLM) - U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings of the best public high schools in the country on Wednesday and both Bemidji High School and Detroit Lakes High School rank among the top 50 schools in Minnesota.

More than 20,000 public high schools across the country were examined and the top performing schools were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals, with gold indicating the “greatest level of college readiness.” Both Bemidji and Detroit Lakes High Schools were awarded Silver medals.

Detroit Lakes Senior High is ranked 49th within Minnesota. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement course work and exams and The AP participation rate at Detroit Lakes Senior High is 41 percent the study indicates..

Bemidji Senior High is ranked 50th within Minnesota. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement course work and exams and The AP participation rate at Bemidji Senior High is 32 percent.

"Top-ranked schools succeed in three main areas: exceeding expectations on state proficiency tests, offering challenging coursework and graduating their students," said Anita Narayan, managing editor of Education at U.S. News.
