Detroit Lakes December Weather Statistics

DETROIT LAKES, MN—Locally, we finished 2017 with the snowiest month of the year. As December’s weather statistics have been compiled by Leighton Broadcasting’s Marty Hembre. The snow fell on 13 days of December with the most snowfall on the first day of winter, December 21st, when we recorded three-inches or 18 hundredths of an inch of precipitation. The total snow accumulation for December was 15.25 inches, which equaled 1.37 inch of precipitation. Last January came in as the second snowiest month in 2017 when we recorded a total of 13.50 inches. December’s snow pushed this winter’s snowfall (October-December) total to 22.25 inches or 4.36 inches of precipitation. The total precipitation for the year of 2017 is 25.41 inches. Temperature-wise in December, we began the month with above average temps and ended making up for that. The average daily high temperature was 19-degrees with the warmest daytime high temp of 45-degrees felt on December 2nd. The coldest daytime high of minus-13-degrees was felt on December 25th. The average overnight low was three-degrees above zero. The coldest overnight low was minus-28-degrees on December 31st with the warmest overnight low of 26-degrees above zero felt on December 19th. There were six days we recorded subzero-temperature daytime highs and 10 nights of subzero lows in December.
Looking back on other 2017 weather statistics, the wettest month was September with 4.39-inches of rain recorded, followed by August in a close second when we recorded 4.19 inches of rain, June was third with 3.38 inches and July fourth with 3.11 inches.
