DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) - A Detroit Lakes Police Officer is being commended after climbing two stories and through a woman's window to retrieve a set of keys.
Chief Steve Todd posted a letter he received on facebook sharing how proud he was of Officer Jason Schnathorst who went "above and beyond to help...in a really difficult situation".
The letter reads, "In these times all we see on the news is the negative side of Law Enforcement. However my experience on Memorial Day with one of your officers was above and beyond what he needed to do which was nothing cause I had lost my keys inside (a local store). We looked for 2 hours and couldn’t find my keys. (The local store) locked their doors at 4pm.
I called 911 and they said they would try to get a car over to me. I waited, hoping a car would show up. I’ve had 2 hip surgeries and can’t walk far, I was in trouble with no car and no apartment key. Your officer showed up and he calmed me down, after discussing my options, he drove me home and climbed onto my balcony thru the unlocked sliding door on 2nd floor.
He got me into my apartment where my little dog was locked up, so also he helped my 4 pound dog. My new hero is your officer."
After doing some checking, Chief Todd discovered that after Officer Schnathorst found the woman's keys he drove her back to the store so she could bring her vehicle home. He thanked his officer for representing the Detroit Lakes Police Department so well and "doing the right thing".
