(KBRF) - With the numerous fishing tournaments and contests on area lakes every summer, questions have arisen as to whether it depletes the fish population and what if any effect it has on lakes.
Minnesota DNR Area Fisheries Supervisor Jim Wolter says ensuring sustainability is the ultimate goal,"the last thing tournament organizers want is to see dead fish floating around, so we work with organizers and have come up with rules to help minimize delayed mortality during the tournaments".
Each year the DNR issues nearly 400 permits to conduct fishing tournaments statewide. They currently limit the number of contests that can take place each month on any water body to more evenly distribute contests across many lakes and rivers.
