Fatal Weekend Fire Reported at Detroit Lakes Condo

(Detroit Lakes, MN) -- An elderly Detroit Lakes man died in a fire at a condominium in Detroit Lakes Saturday afternoon. According to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd, Detroit Lakes police and fire department were called to the scene of smoke coming from the northeast side of the building on the fourth floor of the Edgewater Condos just after 2:30pm Saturday. Chief Todd said crews found 72 year old William McGrath deceased. Residents were evacuated from the building as firefighters extinguished the fire. Authorities say damage was contained to a the single unit but smoke damage affected several other parts of the building. Also assisting at the scene were Becker County Deputies and the Becker County Emergency manager. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army also aided displaced residents. McGrath's body was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
