DETROIT LAKEs, MN--A Fergus Falls man faces two felony counts of motor vehicle theft and fleeing a police officer after his arrest Saturday night in Detroit Lakes. Charges were filed Tuesday in Becker County District Court against 33 year old Jacob Brist who was arrested after allegedly stealing a car from a Detroit Lakes gas station as the vehicle's owner stood at a Redbox DVD-vending machine. According to court documents, the incident happened just before 10:00pm on Saturday. Police were notified and as one officer responded to the gas station, another DLPD officer located the vehicle matching the description, driven by Brist and followed it. The vehicle began to accelerate, heading west down a frontage road in Detroit Lakes, blowing through a number of controlled intersections through the City of Detroit Lakes at Roosevelt, McKinley, Lake Avenues, Holmes Street and Summit Avenue traveling around 70mph until, according to court documents, Brist failed to negotiate a curve, traveled up an embankment and crashed directly into an SUV pulling a trailer that was traveling east on Highway 10. The officer ordered Brist out of the vehicle at gunpoint and he was arrested. Brist faces one count of Motor Vehicle Theft and a count of Fleeing a police officer. His bail was set Tuesday at 25-thousand dollars without conditions and 7,000 with conditions. His next court appearance is April 23rd.
