Free Tax Aide available for some in Lakes Area

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM / TV3) - MUHABE-OTWA Communty Action Partnership is offering free income tax assistance for low-to-moderate income residents and senior tax payers in the Lakes Area this year.
MUHABE-OTWA, a private, non-profit corporation represents low income, public and private sectors of the community living in Mahnomen, Hubbard, Becker, Otter Tail and Wadena counties.
The free income tax assistance program has been around for about 20 years, is staffed by mostly volunteers and funded by the IRS, MN Department of Revenue and West Central Initiative, says Marcia Otte, Family Development Director at MUHABE-OTWA.
Those eligible to utilize the program must meet at least one of the qualifications: 60 years of age or older, have a disability, speak limited or no english, or have an annual income of less than $54,000.
Completed Federal and State returns are performed by trained volunteers and are electronically e-filed; rent and property tax refunds can also be completed.
