Grand Lighting of Ice Palace kicks off Polar Fest in Detroit Lakes

DETROIT LAKES - Polar Fest officially came to life on Thursday with the Grand Lighting Ceremony of the Ice Palace in Detroit Lakes. Harvesting of ice to make up the 600,000 pound, 32-foot-high ice structure was completed January 11-13 on Little Detroit Lake near the Pavilion.
A volunteer crew and artist Hans Gilsdorf built the Ice Palace at the Detroit Lakes city beach over a four week time-span in January. Look for ice sculptures and a palatial playground in the adjacent City Park. Viewing of the Ice Palace is free to the public through February 19.
Polar Fest runs through President's Day, Monday, Feb. 19 and includes events like the Poles 'n Holes Fishing Derby, Polar Explorer Ann Bancroft, a Great Polar Race, an expanded Polarpalooza Tubing Night, Polar Fest Plunge and more! A full list of events can be found at http://polarfestdl.com/
