DETROIT LAKES, MN--The matriarch of the Leighton clan has passed away. Jean Leighton passed away peacefully Tuesday (July 9th) at the family Lake Cabin in Detroit Lakes at the age of 93. Jean Leighton is remembered by all those she met as a kind woman, a loving, dedicated mother, and a fierce Bridge Player.
Jean (Mesenburg) Leighton was a native of St. Cloud who graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School in 1944, received her nursing degree from the College of St. Catherine and became a public health nurse at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud. Jean met Al Leighton, the founder of Leighton Broadcasting, at a football game in 1950 and were married in 1951. Jean and Al were married for 61 years. Al passed away in 2012. The two started their life together in Elk River, then moved to Brainerd where Al worked in Radio, then to Detroit Lakes where Al managed KDLM and back to St. Cloud in 1976 where they settled and purchased KFAM radio and changed the call letters to KCLD. Among the many hats Jean wore throughout the years as a working woman and volunteer, she was a mother to nine children, Michael, Michele, Patty, Kathleen, Lynn, Robert, Mary Jo, Judith and Jeffrey. She was grandma to 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Jean loved the Lord and family most. Secondly, she enjoyed playing Bridge. She learned to play when she was age 10. As any great mom would do, she passed along her strong faith, and love of the game to her children. Jean played Bridge competitively up until a few months ago.
The funeral service for Jean Leighton will be Thursday, July 18th at the Church of St. Augustine in St. Cloud. Family and friends may call Wednesday, July 17th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and from 9:30 am to 10:30 am July 18th at the Church of St. Augustine in St. Cloud.
