DETROIT LAKES, MN--With another winter storm pending and the snow piling up, city and fire officials remind residents to keep fire hydrants open. Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Scott Flynn says it's important to keep the fire hydrant clear of snow as each minute a fire doubles in size and if firefighters arrive at a house fire and find a buried fire hydrant that could mean the difference between saving your house or not.

Fire officials say there should be three feet of clearance on each side of the hydrant. Detroit Lakes Vice Mayor Ron Zeman requested Detroit Lakes residents get their neighbors together in the next few days and have a hydrant-clearing-block party.
