DETROIT LAKES, MN--Officers from area law enforcement agencies responded to a call for assistance with shoppers looking for a little Christmas cheer Tuesday in Detroit Lakes. Detroit Lakes Police Officer Doug Vickmark organized the Shop with a Cop event at Walmart. Vickmark says he, as the school resource officer, applied for a grant through the WalMart Foundation for the event and they received $2000 this year to take area kids shopping. He reached out to the neighboring communities of Lake Park and Frazee to ask if they had any kids who could use a little more cheer in their Christmas this year and arranged for them to be driven the Detroit Lakes store. Students were each taken around the store with one of the officers and were able to chose their own gifts. There were a dozen agencies including the Minnesota State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources, Police Departments from Detroit Lakes, Lake Park and Frazee and the Becker County Sheriff's Department, and of course Santa,on hand at Walmart Tuesday to shop for Christmas gifts with around 20 students from the area.
