One Laker Fall Sport Still Alive and Kicking: Laker Girls Swim and Dive Athletes Headed to State Click to Enlarge

GRAND RAPIDS, MN--Detroit Lakes Lakers will be represented by seven swimmers and one diver in ten events at the State Class A Girls Swim and Dive meet the coming week. The Lakers placed 2nd as a team at the Section 8A Girls Swim and Dive Championship in Grand Rapids this weekend.

Individual Section Champions were Jen Tracy in the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly and Madison Gerdes in the 100 Breaststroke. Jen Tracy also cleaned house in the 100 butterfly by breaking her own Section 8A record posting a 58.49, the old record was 58.82 and that time also broke the Grand Rapids pool record. Other state qualifiers include the 200 medley relay (Lucy Steinke, Madi Gerdes, Jen Tracy and Evan Westrum) who placed 2nd; Kaityln Peterson who finished 2nd in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle; Jackson Hegg who finished 3rd in Diving; Evan Westrum, who finished 2nd in the 100 butterfly; the 200 freestyle relay (E. Westrum, Steinke, Chelsy Johnson, Peterson) who finished 2nd; Lucy Steinke who finished 2nd in the 100 backstroke; the 400 freestyle relay (Tracy, Johnson, Hamm, Peterson) who finished 2nd.

Other top-16 finishers (Point-getters) included:

Faith Hamm 3rd in the 200 freestyle and 4th in the 500 freestyle; Chelsy Johnson 6th in the 200 freestyle and 3rd in the 100 freestyle; Madi Gerdes 11th in the 200IM; Rylie Wendt 16th in the 200 IM; Lucy Steinke 3rd in the 50 freestyle; Jess Bolar 13th in the 50 freestyle; Lexi Gerdes 6th in the 100 butterfly and 4th in the 100 breaststroke; Marin Westrum 10th in the 100 freestyle and 12th in the 100 Backstroke; Ellie Staley 11th in the 500 freestyle and 7th in the 100 breaststroke; also in diving Kylie Tulius placed 11th, Ava Morrison 13th and Kaitlyn Anderson, 15th.

Other Section notables: Lucy Steinke and Jen Tracy were voted as Section 8a "Swimmers of the Meet" by the 10 Section 8A coaches. The Lakers team also earned a Gold Standard Academic Award for their team 3.82 GPA average.

The Lakers finished with 419 points. Grand Rapids won the meet with 439 points. Bemidji finished 3rd with 292 and Park Rapids 4th with 291 points; rounding out 5th-10th team placings were Fergus Falls (206), Thief River Falls (162), Fosston-Bagley (123), Perham New York Mills (113), Warroad and Crookston (58).

The State Meet is November 14th-16 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
