DETROIT LAKES, MN--An urgent message from Detroit Lakes Police Department to Detroit Lakes residents to lock your doors and windows at night as three homes are burglarized as homeowners slept. In one instance, a shotgun mounted right over the bed of the homeowner was stolen as he slept. Detroit Lakes Policed Chief Steve Todd says he doesn't usually alert the public about burglaries, because they happen all the time. He says the burglaries Sunday morning are of particular concern because of the brazen way they occurred: entering homes through unlocked doors or windows while homeowners were sleeping. Chief Todd says the incidents occurred in the northwest side of Detroit Lakes, in an area bordered by Highway 34 on the north, Highway 10 on the south, Highway 59 on the west and Washington Avenue on the east. He says the incidents occurred between 4:00am and 5:00am. Items taken included money, wallets and a shotgun. He says the incidences are currently under investigation and no suspect(s) information is being released. Todd says it's extremely important for community members to lock their doors and windows at night to reduce opportunities for burglar. He also adds that keeping exteriors of homes well-lit is also a good deterrent. If suspicious activity is observed, Chief Todd asks you to please contact dispatch at 9-1-1 or 218-847-2661. If you have any information that would assist officers with the investigation of the burglaries, please contact the DLPD directly at 847-4222.
