SOUTH KOREA (KNSI/AP) - A gold medalist from Minnesota will get the honor to carry the American flag during the 2018 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremonies.
Jessie Diggins, of Afton, won the first gold medal for the U.S. in cross-country history, along with her teammate Kikkan Randall.
Diggins finished the team sprint event by holding off the second and third place skiers, then collapsing just after the finish line. She says winning gold has been a dream come true and being the flag bearer at the closing ceremonies on Sunday night will be a great way to top it off.
The closing ceremonies get underway Sunday at 7 p.m.
Afton business owners and residents are already planning to honor their hometown hero. City Council member Bill Palmquist says the city will declare a "Jessie Diggins Day" once a date can be arranged.
