ST. PAUL, MN--With no budget agreement yet, many people at the State Capitol acknowledge it’s probably not possible for the Minnesota Legislature to finish its work before Monday’s adjournment deadline at midnight. Republican Representative Dan Fabian from Roseau says, “If you would have asked us two weeks ago or asked me two weeks ago where we’d be today, I probably [would] say we’d [have] been kind of in the same place.” Fabian says it’s because over the years people’s positions on major issues have become more divided and farther apart.
If the legislature doesn’t pass a new state budget by Monday at midnight, a special session would then be needed. Lawmakers could also decide to temporarily continue the current state budget to avoid partial state government shutdown July 1st.
