DETROIT LAKES, MN--In a move to accommodate more of Becker County's working families who find themselves coming up short when it comes to buying groceries, the Becker County Food Pantry will expand hours beginning the coming week. Becker County Pantry manager Brad Carlson says the food pantry is currently open Tuesdays and Thursdays from Noon to 3:00pm. He says beginning September 10th, the pantry will open the second Tuesday of the month from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Carlson says he did a study of clients who use the food pantry and found that the majority of clients don't come in every month--and that's good news to Becker County that people are out there working hard. He says the pantry exists for those people who have emergency needs.
Carlson says there are two requirements for those wishing to utilized the once-a-month extended hours. People must call in ahead of time the second Tuesday of the month to let the pantry know when they will be coming. The food shelf number: 218-846-0142. Carlson says if no one calls on the 10th saying they are coming between 4:00pm and 7:00pm they won't open. Secondly, the people arriving between the extended hours will get to "shop" for what they'd like, meaning there won't be any pre-made boxes as is the usual practice so clients may bring their own containers for the food.
Second Tuesday's of the month there after will proceed the same way.
