OTTER TAIL (KBRF) - It’s a growing issue in the state, currently you have to be 18 to purchase tobacco products in Otter Tail County. The County Board of Commisioners and Public Health are looking to change that.
"We're trying to update the tobacco ordinance, the big push is to have all four counties in the area to have similar ordinances and compliance checks, says Jason Mccoy, Tobacco Prevention Coordinator.
McCoy also says that some retailers around West Central Minnesota may be trying to get around current laws by selling what the youth culture refers to as ‘vapes’ or ‘vaping’ and electronic cigarettes. McCoy said these still contain nicotine and are dangerous and addictive. He says more education needs to be done so parents and business know what is being sold and marketed to those under 21.
