DETROIT LAKES, MN--Several residents voicing their opposition during a public hearing for a proposed road extension kill the project. The proposed project was to extend Pelican Lane south by 650 feet to connect to 8th Street. Several residents voiced their concerns Tuesday night about opening up the cul-de-sac that currently sits at the end of Pelican Lane. Most were concerned with cars speeding through their neighborhood that is a mix of retired citizens and children. City staff stated the proposed extension was requested by Lakes Crisis and Resource Center which also is located in that area. City Planner Larry Remmen stated that based on a survey the city conducted the indication was more residents were in favor of the project than not. He said the city had sent out a survey, which didn't include the project costs, to the area's 30 residents and received 20 surveys back with 12 residents in favor, 8 not in favor and 10 who didn't respond. The city conducted an engineering study of the project and came up with project costs. At Tuesday's public hearing where assessment costs were presented, six residents against the project spoke at the public hearing. Including Pelican Lane resident Dan Abrahams who said he moved to Pelican Lake over 20 years ago because it was a safe cul-de-sac area to raise his family. One property owner who does not live in the area but is looking to develop 50 to 100 living units was in favor. No one representing Lakes Crisis Center was on hand at Tuesday's meeting to speak. Following the public hearing and a recommendation by the public works committee to deny the project the city council voted unanimously to decline the extension.
