Rural Aitkin County Man In Custody In Missing Outing Woman Homicide Investigation Case

AITKIN, MN—A rural Aitkin County man is in custody following an investigation into what authorities say is a homicide in the death of an Outing woman.
The body of Michelle Mae was found the afternoon of October 15th on private property in Swatara, in northwest Aitkin County. Mae had been missing since October 3rd.
Wednesday, more details were released by the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office who said early in the missing person investigation, October 4th, Mae’s Jeep Liberty was located and sent to the BCA for processing. During the investigation, on October 5th, 34-year-old Joshua Karjara, of Swatara was arrested for a probation violation and remains in custody. The sheriff’s office says daily ground and K-9 searches over 10 days, along with drone and water searches, warrants for cellular data, and warrants for searches of private property where conducted by several agencies.
Mae’s body was recovered October 15th while executing another search warrant on property where Karjara resides. The Sheriff’s Office says the medical examiner’s preliminary findings conclude Mae’s death was likely a homicide. Toxicology reports are pending.
The Sheriff’s Office investigation will be forwarded to the Aitkin County Attorney’s Office.
Agencies assisting in the missing person investigation included Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the DNR, St. Louis and Aitkin County Search and Rescue personnel, Grand Rapids Police Department, Aitkin County Volunteer Search and Rescue, Wisconsin Department of Justice, and the BCA.
