MOORHEAD, MN — A man is in custody after a nine hour standoff at a home at 1423 Fifth Street South in Moorhead., near the Concordia College campus. Police were called to the house for a domestic incident around 9 yesterday morning. A woman managed to escape the house and fled to a neighbor's where she called 911. She reported she was held against her will and threatened with a gun. But the man stayed in the home and was believed to have a gun. Negotiators had periodic phone contact with 35-year old Blake Fitzgerald but he refused to surrender. The situation ended around 5:40 yesterday afternoon when police used tear gas and he surrendered. Police Chief Shannon Monroe said everyone went home safe, the suspect included, there was no tragic accident. "The best we could ask fore," the chief said.
Charges are being sorted out as the investigation continues but police say domestic assault and threat related charges are expected. Fitzgerald was also wanted on a felony warrant in Wisconsin.
