BATTLE LAKE (KBRF) - A rural Battle Lake man fears a Social Security scam may have hit the Lakes Area.
The rural Battle Lake man reported to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday around 4pm that he had received a voice mail message from a company claiming that his Social Security number had been compromised or hacked.
The Sheriff’s Office advised the man that it was most likely a scam. The man told Sheriff’s Deputies that he would bring in a recording of the voicemail.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate, but suggests that you should not give any personal information including social security number to anyone who calls or sends you an official-looking email, who texts you a link to any site or designates a number to call where you are asked to confirm your SSN.
