DETROIT LAKES, MN--Meet a star goat or see if skiers float, lots of opportunities to take in some fresh air and fun this weekend in the Detroit Lakes Area.
Sunday at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, families are invited to a free Family Fun Day and book signing. The Friends of Tamarac say along with puppet shows, nature photography, nature story books, scavenger hunt hiking and creating pine cone owls, Maurice the Goat will be on hand. Maurice is the inspiration of a new children's book Maurice the Goat Finds His Family by local author Georgia Nagel (NAY-Gul), who will also be on hand to sign copies of her book. The Family Day and Book signing happen from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The Tamarac Visitor Center is open Sunday 10:00am - 5:00pm. Tamarac is located about 20 minutes north of Detroit Lakes.
Also Sunday, Detroit Mountain Recreation Area holds its annual Pond Skim where about 100 skiers or snowboarders, most in costume, attempt to skim across a 100-foot-long pond without wiping out. Obviously, some do and some don't but it's spectacular either way.
DMRA Executive Director Jeff Staley invites everyone out to the Pond Skim that happens from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Sunday followed by music by the Haymakers inside the lodge from 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
Staley says the Pond Skim marks the beginning of the end of the winter season and is probably the last weekend of snow tubing. Ski runs will remain open for maybe a couple more weeks as conditions permit. Staley says this season the recreation area saw the busiest-day record broken. This season on December 30th they had 2243 people check in on the mountain which was about 100 more than the record set in 2016.
