Waubun Man Formally Charged in Becker County Hit and Run

MN--A Waubun man is charged with Criminal Vehicular Homicide and Traffic
Collision Failure to Stop-Injury or Death in the fatal hit and run accident in
Becker County last month. According to court records, 36 year old Aaron Pelham
was charged July 3rd in Becker County District Court after an investigation by
the Becker County Sheriff's Office that lead to his arrest July 1st. Case files
state, on the evening of June 24th the Becker County Sheriff's Office was
notified of the crash between a car and at UTV on a county road in Maple Grove
Township. When deputies arrived they found an abandoned 1999 Mercury Marquis
with front end damage and two airbags deployed and a UTV driver in the UTV with
traumatic injuries. Another male at the scene of the incident said he believed
the car belonged to Pelham. The UTV driver, 27 year old Michael Tibbetts died
the next day from his injuries. Records
allege on July 1st a male contacted the sheriff's office saying Pelham had been
in contact with a female the night of the crash via Facebook Messenger.
Pelham's first message stated he was on his way to see the woman. A second
message from Pelham about 20 minutes later said he'd been in an accident and
needed a licensed driver. The woman met Pelham at the scene he then took off
from the scene in a truck traveling a short distance until he stopped and ran
into the woods according to court documents.
July 1st, Pelham was arrested. Pelham's driver’s license is cancelled.
He has been convicted 10 times for driving after cancellation since 2008.
Pelham is in the Becker County jail with bail set at 100-thousand dollars and
50-thousand with conditions. His next court date is July 29th.
