DETROIT LAKES, MN---A Waubun man faces criminal counts of animal mistreatment following the deaths of three horses this winter near Strawberry Lake in Becker County. A summons was issued Tuesday for Forty-two year old Michael Erwin Dahl to appear in Becker County District Court on three felony counts of mistreatment-torture of animals. Court records state the Becker County Sheriff’s Office was notified of three dead horses on property near Strawberry Lake on January 24th of this year. Records state a Sheriff’s Office investigator contacted one of the horse’s owners who indicated she had left her horse in the care of Dahl when she left the country. The woman told the investigator she had wired money to Dahl for the purchase of hay for her horse and had communicated via text on the welfare of the horse. Records allege the investigator verified the woman’s statements and read the texts between the two. The court complaint states the investigator and a doctor from the Minnesota Board of Animal Health visited the site of the deceased horses and the doctor determined the horses had starved and that hypothermia was secondary to the starvation during extremely cold weather and may also have contributed to the death of the horses. Dahl has been summoned to a first court appearance in Becker County District Court on June 5th.
