AITKIN, MN--Two victims of a fatal house fire in Aitkin County Sunday night are identified. Aitkin County Sheriff Dan Guida says 69-year-old Sandra Neumann reported her home in Shamrock Township was filled with smoke at 11:10pm Sunday, March 31st. The Sheriff says Neumann reported that everyone was out of the house but her dogs were still inside. Aitkin County Sheriff's Department and the McGregor Fire Department responded. Just after 11:30pm when the McGregor Fire Department arrived they noted no one was outside the residence. A fire crew entered the home and found 80 year old Raymond Jackson and Neumann deceased. Sheriff Guida says an initial investigation of the fire by the sheriff's department and the State Fire Marshall indicates suspicion of smoking and falling asleep on the couch. Preliminary autopsy results of Neumann and Jackson by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner indicates the cause of death of each to be smoke and soot inhalation.
The State Fire Marshal says the Aiktin County fire was one of two fatal fires in the State this week and are tragic reminders: 1. Practice your family escape plan; 2. Stay out once you escape a fire; 3. Prevent fires.
