DETROIT LAKES, MN--Homelessness is not just an urban issue. It's here in rural Minnesota, Detroit Lakes, Becker County and the surrounding areas.
Homelessness is the topic of a forum in which Karen Crabtree from Becker County Energize will take part as one of the speakers Sunday afternoon in Detroit Lakes. She says her organization has taken a holistic view of the issue. She says it's a widespread problem experienced by school children, foster kids, to domestic assault victims or adults with mental health or chemical dependency issues, by the elderly, or by people who simply can't afford a home. She says in Becker County specifically there's a great number of people living in poverty and cannot afford the housing available. She's been working with a number of agencies including the Housing Institute and Compassion House working to raise awareness of the multi-faceted issue of homelessness. Crabtree says they are looking for input from members of the community for what happens next. Crabtree, along with representatives from Lakes Crisis and Resource Center, MAHUBE-OTWA Community Council and Detroit Lakes Public Schools, will be on hand for the "Nowhere To Lay Their Head" Forum in Detroit Lakes Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00pm at Ecumen's Aspen Room. Crabtree invites anyone to show up to the forum. The forum on homelessness is sponsored by the Congregational Church of Detroit Lakes and it's free.
