DETROIT LAKES, MN--A young child escaped serious injuries Wednesday evening in Detroit Lakes after an encounter with a car backing out of a driveway. Detroit Lakes Police Department responded to the report of a child being struck by a car on private property at a trailer park off 8th Street. According to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd, the responding officer's report stated a driver was backing out of a driveway at the trailer park and was watching group of kids who were biking around the street pass by. The report stated the driver said they saw the group pass, but didn't see one of the smaller kids who had fallen off his bike just behind the car and was attempting to quickly grab the bike as the car began backing out and the back wheel apparently pinched the boy's arm before stopping. The responding officer indicated the boy suffered some bad scuffs and abrasions but apparently nothing broken, and was transported by private vehicle to the hospital. The call came in just after 6:00 pm. Chief Todd says the driver is cooperating with the DLPD and no citations are expected to be issued.
