Detroit Lakes Lakers Girls Swim and Dive team wins the Section 8A Championship

WARROAD, MN--Detroit Lakes Lakers Girls Swim and Dive team wins the Section 8A title. After 12 years, the team wins it's second Section 8A title in team history. The Lakers finished 37 points ahead of the defending champs Bemidji Lumberjacks. The Lakers qualified nine individuals in 8 events for the MSHSL Class A State Meet.
The team produced State Champ wins in six individual events and one relay: Kaitlyn Peterson in the 200 Freestyle; Jen Tracy in the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly; Lexi Yliniemi in Diving; Syd Gulon in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and the 400 free relay (Gulon, Lucy Steinke, Kaitlyn Peterson, Jen Tracy). The Lakers also had three individuals and one relay qualifier who finished second: Kaitlyn Peterson in the 500 freestyle; Evan Westrum in the 100 fly and Madi Gerdes in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 medley relay of Josie Retz, Syd Gulon, Jen Tracy and Lucy Steinke. Also, Jackson Hegg earned a trip to the State meet with a fourth-place finish in diving.
Other top 16 finishers:
The 200 freestyle relay of Evan Westrum, Chelsy Johnson, Faith Hamm and Kaitlyn Peterson finished 3rd; Josie Retz finished 3rd in the 100 backstroke and 11th in the 200 freestyle; Ellie Staley finished 3rd in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in the 500 freestyle; Faith Hamm finished 6th in the 200 freestyle and 4th in the 500 freestyle; Lexi Gerdes finished 11th in the 200 IM and 6th in the 100 butterfly; Lucy Steinke finished fifth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle; Evan Westrum finished 6th in the 50 freestyle; Chelsy Johnson finished 14th in the 100 freestyle and 9th in the 100 breaststroke; Kennedy Hegg finished 11th in diving and Kylie Tulius finished 16th in diving.

The Lumberjacks have held the Section Title for the last seven years.
The State Meet happens Wednesday, November 14th through Friday, November 16th at the U of M Pool in Minneapolis.
