Laker Softball Gets Revenge Against Bemidji in Dramatic Fashion

The Laker softball was able to win in dramatic fashion in the second round of the Section 8AAA Playoffs beating Bemidji 6-5. The Lakers will advance to play Sartell Monday for a chance at the section championship.
Bemidji struck first with a 2-run homer of the bat of Evette Morgan to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Lakers would cut the lead in the 2nd inning with a Dakota Moran homer over the centerfield fence.
The score would remain 2-1 until the 5th inning, Matteya Borah came up big with a double to the fence to tie the game at 2. Then Madilyn Kirchner, laced a single to left scoring Borah to make it 3-2. Bemidji would answer in their half of the 5th scoring one run to tie the game 3-3.
In the 6th inning with two outs, Autumn Kulik would reach on a single, and two consecutive fielder’s choice would put Sara Freeman on first base. Number 8 hitter Taylor Prussia would launch a 2-run shot to deep center to put the Lakers up by two.
Madilyn Kirchner would struggle in the 6th and walk the Leadoff batter, hit a batter, and give up a single that hit the top of the fence to tie the game at 5. Kirchner was able to settle down and get a comeback grounder and strike out to escape the 6th inning all tied up.
The Lakers would take the lead for good in the 7th with a leadoff single by Borah. Kirchner was able to execute a sacrifice bunt to move Borah into scoring position. Borah was able to advance to third base after a fielder’s choice. Then, Kulik was able to beat out an infield single to score Borah and reach safely.
In Bemidji’s half of the 7th inning, the Lumberjacks had the top of the order due up. Kirchner was able to get a weak pop up to 3rd and a grounder to 3rd for two quick outs. Next up, Bemidji’s power hitter was at the plate Evette Morgan who had hit a homer earlier in the day. Kirchner was able to get ahead in the count, but Morgan worked the count full, Kirchner was able to freeze Morgan on strike three for the win.
Kirchner struck out 7, walked 2, hit 3 batters, and gave up 3 hits for the win to improve to 12-3 on the year. At the plate Detroit Lakes was led by Matteya Borah who finished 3 for 4 and scored the winning run. The Lakers collected 9 hits in all.
Detroit Lakes will travel to Sartell on Monday for a 12pm/ 2pm start.
