Laker Sports Brief 12-17-18

The Laker wrestling team finished in 2nd place at the Big Bear Wrestling Tournament, in Cass Lake. Placing for the Lakers were: Cade Okeson 7th, Brody Ullyott 4th, Blake Weber 6th, Fabyon Greer 2nd, Brennen Sather 6th, Isaiah Thompson 2nd, Noah Olds 3rd, and Charles Barnett 5th. Next up for the Wrestling team they will host a triangular on Friday versus Hibbing and Pierz. You can listen to that meet on KDLM on Friday.
The Lakers were blasted by the Alexandria Cardinals over the weekend falling by a final score of 73-44. DL falls to 1-3 on the season and are now 0-2 versus section opponents. Tomorrow, the boys will travel to Staples to take on the Cardinals, which will be a Mid-State Conference game.
The Laker hockey team remained undefeated over the weekend, with a win against St. Paul Johnson on Saturday 4-3. The Lakers fell behind early in the game trailing 2-0 after the 1st period. The Lakers then shook off their bus legs and bounced back with goals by Nick Lund and Rolland Cormier, in the 2nd period. The Lakers scored two more goals in the 3rd period, with Cormier finding the back of the net for his second of the game and Will Green with an empty net goal. St. Paul Johnson was able to tally with 40 seconds left but goalie Blake Itzen and the team were able to close out the game. With the win the Lakers move to 7-0 on the season and will next be in action against West Fargo December 27th in the Fergus Falls Tournament. The gymnastics team was able to take home some hardware over the weekend with a win in the Brainerd Invite. Next up for the 4-time defending state champs, they will host an invite tomorrow versus Perham. Also, on Friday it was announced that gymnastics coach Steve Zamzo of Detroit Lakes was named the 2018 Greatmats National Gymnastics Coach of the Year. Coach Zamzo was a semi-finalist with Valorie Kondos Field of UCLA.
The Laker dance team took part in the Melrose Invite over the weekend. DL jazz took 2nd out of 10 teams. High kick placed 6th. The Lakers are now off until January 5th when they will travel to Alexandria for an invite.
