Girls Basketball

The Fergus Falls girls’ basketball team is heading to state after they beat Alexandria in the Section 8AAA Championship 43-42. Ellie Colbeck scored a team-high 14 points, Sabrina Fronning scored 11 points, and Tori Ratz buried three second-half three-pointers to finish with 9 points. Fergus Falls improves to 23-4 on the season. They will play in the Class 3A State quarterfinals on Wednesday. Alexandria ends their season with a final record of 22-5.

This was the fifth time in the last nine years that the Otters and Cardinals have met in the Section 8AAA championship game with the Otter win three of the five meeting. Alexandria won the section title a year ago when they beat the Otters 46-45.

Boys Basketball

The Mahnomen Waubun Thunderbirds advanced to the next round of the Section 6A playoffs after beating Park Christian 68-44 in the Sub-Section Quarterfinals. Senior Treston Spalla finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals to help his team advance. The win improves the Thunderbirds record to 18-8 on the season. Park Christian is eliminated from the playoffs and ends their season with a record of 10-18. Next up, Mahnomen Waubun will take on Norman County East. The game is scheduled for Saturday at Concordia College in Moorhead. If the game is postponed it would be played Monday at the Perham High School.

Boys Hockey

The Minnesota State Class AA Boys Hockey tournament began yesterday, with quarterfinal action at the Xcel Energy Center. Top-seeded Edina defeated Moorhead, 4-2, in the Class AA quarterfinal game on Thursday at Xcel Energy Center. The Hornets were leading 3-2 late in the third period and solidified that lead when senior forward Kevin Delaney scored an empty-net goal with 29 seconds in regulation remaining. The No. 1 Hornets advance to semifinal action in hopes of improving upon their 2018 third-place finish. Edina will play #4 St. Thomas Academy at 8pm. Moorhead will play their consolation game today at noon versus Duluth East.
