DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) - The State of Minnesota plans to distribute $853 million in federal funding to Minnesota communities impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Becker County will receive about $4.2 million while the city of Detroit Lakes will receive $714,000.
Local governments can use the funding to support services and grants to businesses, hospitals and individuals impacted by the pandemic. Rep Paul Marquart says, "If businesses have had to close or have had less customers, this is a way for cities and counties to customize economic development grants and programs and get those dollars out to businesses that have suffered the most due to COVID-19".
Before receiving the funding, local governments will have to certify how they intend to use the money, as the CARES Act requires payments only be used to cover necessary costs related to the pandemic that weren't accounted for in state budgets.
