Detroit Lakes Drowning Victim Identified

DETROIT LAKES, MN—The Becker County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the man who drown after saving his 3-year-old child from drowning Saturday night in Dead Shot Bay. Thirty-one-year-old Christopher Francis Nicholas Schultz of Frazee died after rescuing his 3-year-old child when the child had fallen off Long Bridge into the water.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office received the report of a
possible drowning at Long Bridge at Dead Shot Bay just after 8:20pm Saturday.
Officers arrived and were told a 3-year-old child had fallen off the bridge
into the water and the child’s father, Schultz, had jumped into the water to help the
child. The father began to struggle keeping the child’s head above the water.
Bystanders went into the water and brought the child to shore but the Schultz never resurfaced.
Officers from Detroit Lakes Police Department, the Becker County Sheriff’s Office and St. Mary’s EMS began an immediate search for Schultz. Around 9:07pm, with the help of a fisherman and the Becker County Dive Rescue Team, the Schultz was located. The man was taken by ambulance to the Essentia/St. Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The child was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Also assisting at the scene were the Detroit Lakes Fire Department, MN State Patrol and MN DNR.
