DETROIT LAKES, MN--Detroit Lakes Fire Department responded to two fire calls in the city Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
This (Tuesday) morning, Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Ryan Swanson says crews were called to a car fire just after 3:30 am on the 400 block of Lake Avenue--on the north side of the city. Swanson says it's suspicious and are asking for the public's help. Swanson asks anyone, individual or business, with security cameras in the area of the 400 block of Lake Avenue just south of the Union Square Apartments to call the Detroit Lakes Police Department.
Chief Swanson says Monday night fire crews were called out to the Mountain View Apartments on Barbara Avenue just after 10:00 pm. He says following the fire last year in an apartment a new alarm system was installed throughout the building. The chief says the new alarm system alerted. Law enforcement arrived and found smoke on the second floor. He says the fire department found some clothes smoldering in an apartment where the sole occupant had left for work.
Swanson says the origin of the smoldering clothing was likely due to an unattended cigarette. He says there were burned up cigarettes lying next to the clothing. The fire chief reminds people to make sure their the batteries in their fire alarms are working because the alarms do their job.
