DETROIT LAKES, MN--Cue the north wind! Snowflakes! Lights!
Detroit Lakes'embrace of winter, Polar Fest, officially kicks off tonight with the lighting of King Isbit's Ice Throne. Dozens of volunteers have been working since the fall, installing electric infrastructure to light up the ice structure; in early January, harvesting 1000 ice blocks for building; and since mid-January, erecting the ice throne.
Tonight is the big night with a ceremony and lighting of King Isbit's 2020 Ice Throne. Carrie Johnston from Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce invites everyone out for tonight's ceremony. She says there will be music and fire pits and the throne will be lit at 7:00pm.
Polar Fest events run throughout the next 10 days. Among events this weekend, Saturday, is the Poles 'n Holes fishing derby on Little Detroit Lake sponsored by Detroit Lakes' Breakfast Rotary, the Chamber's Great Polar Race and the Fandazzi Fire Circus. Organizers say events for outdoor recreation, family fun, foodies and arts and entertainment can be found at www.polarfestdl.com.
