DETROIT LAKES, MN--The new year brings new offerings at Detroit Lakes Public Library. Library Director Greta Guck says this month the library begins offering free movie screenings. She says this last summer the library was fortunate to upgrade the audio visual equipment in the main meeting room thanks to the library's endowment fund. And using funds from the Friends of the Library a movie license to show feature films was obtained.
Guck says each month they will have First Friday Foreign Films, and also this month, Monday January 13th, are partnering with the Becker County Museum to offer free film screenings in collaboration with the Electrifying MN Exhibit. Starting at 10AM on the 13th they will screen "Edison the Man"; at 2:00 pm "Weird Science"; At 4:00 pm "The Iron Giant"; at 6:30pm "Young Frankenstein."
Guck says the First Friday Foreign Film in Februray will be the academy award winning Italian film"Life is Beautiful". That will show at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, February 7th.
But that's not all, in the summer of 2020, Guck says the DL Book Bike is coming. The idea is a mobile unit that will allow staff to be out and about at community events for people to check out books or get a library card. Greta says the plan is to also have a Wi-Fi hotspot on the bike. The library is getting the bike made locally through DL Bike Shop and fundraising efforts are in full swing. Greta says you can donate in person at the library or send your donation by mail to the Detroit Lakes Public Library. There is also a spin-a-thon fundraiser planned for Mid-March.
