Life has been different for residents and employees at Ecumen in Detroit Lakes since mid-March.

"It's been a long three months," says Ecumen Community Relations manager Charlie Newland, "But our safety measures have worked and we've seen that on our campus."

After three months of tight visitor restrictions on the Ecumen Detroit Lakes campus, Newland is coordinating steps so that Ecumen residents can once again have some social distanced face-to-face time with their families and loved ones.

"We have a lot of iPads on our campus. Our residents have become very familiar with Zoom and Google Hangouts. It's a way for residents to communicate with their loved ones, which is fantastic but it's not the same. There are still no visitors or vendors inside our building, but we are starting to loosen things up a little bit. In in the last two weeks, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has issued new guidance so in the last two weeks we have now allowed window visits with family and residents wearing masks. And last week, with new MDH guidelines, we are able to set up 20-minute outdoor visits now too."

Outdoor visits must be coordinated with the staff prior to arrival. You can also make virtual and in-person appointments on the Ecumen website.

Newland says that even with family visits now available, there are still some residents who could use somebody to talk to.

"We have a great life enrichment team at Ecumen. They're doing daily one-on-one visits with the residents. We can't have any group activities at this time like Bingo, but there is still the one-on-one life enrichment activities. Everyone is wearing the proper PPE. Our team has done an excellent job making sure there is no social isolation and making sure that the residents have some sort of connection. But a unique thing that we're looking for are volunteers to set up Zoom calls and eVisits with residents. Sometimes just a simple conversation goes a long ways. Whether it be a phone call or the Zoom platform. Just to let them know that you're out there thinking about them.

In addition, Ecumen is hiring for a number of positions (CLICK HERE TO APPLY) and have a number of resident availability opportunities including apartments in their Independent Living facility. Call 218-847-4486 for more information.
