DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) - The first day of in-person learning for Detroit Lakes elementary students began today.

The date had been pushed back from Monday to give the schools an opportunity to meet with families prior to the school year. Students and parents met with school staff in one-one- family conferences to get a feel for what the school year would look like.

As the first day of in-person learning begins each student is required to wear a mask. The school will give each student a cloth mask as well as 3 disposable masks; face shields will be utilized as necessary provided by the Minnesota Department of Education.

Masks alone may not be enough to stop a COVID outbreak within the schools. The district had to abruptly change from the hybrid model to a full distance learning model at the high school earlier this week after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19, Sunday.
