DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) - Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has urged the campaigns of Donald Trump and Joe Biden to abide by the state’s guidelines for slowing the coronavirus when they visit Minnesota on Friday.
Trump has a rally scheduled for Friday in Bemidji. Biden’s campaign has not yet announced a city or venue for his visit.
The Democratic governor is hoping they’ll comply voluntarily instead of forcing the state to enforce its guidelines, but that's unlikely for both candidates.
In an interview with KDLM, Representative Paul Marquart said, "I do think some of those rules go out the window for better or for worse; the thing about it is the fact that you have presidential candidates coming to Minnesota. What it means is that Minnesota is a state that is up for grabs."
In 2016, Trump came close to winning Minnesota carrying 78 of the 87 counties and losing the state by fewer than 45,000 votes.
The Trump campaign has reserved $14 million in airtime in Minnesota this election cycle hoping to swing the state from Democratic to Republican.
