DETROIT LAKES, MN--Implementation of the the half-cent sales tax in Detroit Lakes is moving forward. Detroit Lakes voters approved the tax in November and the Minnesota State Legislature last month approved it to fund a new $6 million-dollar police station facility in Detroit Lakes. Detroit Lakes City Council gave first reading Tuesday to enact the tax. A special meeting will be held June 20th (4:00 pm) for the second reading and adoption of the tax. City Administrator Kelcey Klemm says the resolution needs to be received by the State Department of Revenue Commission by the end of the month for implementation on October 1st.
Also at Tuesday's meeting, BKV Group has been approved as the architects for the new Police Station project. Vice Mayor Ron Zeman says five firms were interviewed by the public safety committee for the project.
