DETROIT LAKES, MN--Memorial Day activities across the country will look a little different this year due to the pandemic. Detroit Lakes' commemoration of the day will continue in Detroit Lakes with a few adjustments. Those who attend activities may do while remaining in their vehicles. The Avenue of Flags runs through Monday at Oak Grove Cemetery just north of the city off Highway 59. The usual parade and service in the Pavilion have been cancelled. But Monday, the local American Legion and VFW posts will hold a brief Memorial Day service outside at the Veterans Memorial Park at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Highway 10. That will include a 21-gun salute by the Color Guard along with lowering the Stars and Stripes and service flags to replace them with new ones that will be raised once the ceremony is completed. There will be a prayer from a military chaplain and a few local dignitaries on hand to say a few words. The event usually starts around 10:00am.
