DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) - Some Detroit Lakes students could be left without a transportation option to school this fall.
The Detroit Lakes School District is encouraging families to complete their transportation form so the district can accurately begin creating bus routes for the upcoming school year.
If Laker families do not submit their request by August 28, students will be without a bus ride to school for at least 2 weeks after school starts.
Bus route planning has become extremely complicated for the 2020-21 school year. According to the State Planning Guide for Schools, daily temperature screens are recommended for anyone boarding a school bus, reducing capacity or adding routes to allow for more physical space between riders is also encouraged.
In an interview with KDLM in early July, Ethan Walz with Olander Bus Service, said they're preparing to adapt, "we've been working closely with the school district to prepare - we're expecting to reduce ridership on each bus, possibly with one kid per seat and skipping every other row on the buses. We're looking at bringing in electrostatic sprayers to sanitize the buses after each route and Clorox wipe our high touched areas including seat-backs, seat-bottoms and drivers areas."
