ST. PAUL (KDLM) - Over 16,000 citations were given on Minnesota roads during a month long extra enforcement campaign.

Officers, deputies and troopers form 323 law enforcement agencies across Minnesota reported 16,122 citations for unsafe speeds during the June 22 through July 19 extra enforcement and awareness campaign. That's down from more than 21,000 citations in 2019.

While the extra speed enforcement campaign dates vary year-to-year, speeding choices led to a jump in speed-related fatalities when comparing this year’s campaign to the same date range of previous years. So far there have been 15 speed related fatalities across the state of Minnesota, that's double from 2019 where only 7 speed related fatalities were recorded on Minnesota roadways during the extra enforcement period.
