DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) - The first round of pavement has started to be laid on the Heartland Trail in Detroit Lakes.
The $1.7 million project will create a multi-use trail from the Detroit Lakes underpass on Highway 10 East to Acorn Lake between Detroit Lakes and Frazee.
The 3.75-mile stretch of paved trail is being built on property owned by Becker County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The project from Detroit Lakes to Acorn Lake should be close to completion by October of this year.
The Minnesota Legislature authorized the extension of the Heartland Trail from Park Rapids to Moorhead in 2006, with a master trail plan completed by the DNR in June of 2011.
