A portion of the cattle barn at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds has collapsed. The 117,450-square-foot brick barn is nearly a century old and can house up 1,000 head of cattle.
Firefighters arrived on the fairgrounds Tuesday night to access the damage and determine a cause of the collapse. A structural engineer determined that heavy snow from an adjacent rooftop fell onto the cattle barn and caused it to collapse.
According to the St. Paul Fire Department, the part of the building that collapsed was used to house trailers and other equipment.
In a statement, the Minnesota State Fair says the rest of the building remains structurally sound.
The Minnesota State Fair will be August 22nd thru September 2nd, 2019, but the cattle barn is used during the spring and summer months for other events.
