Tragic Loss Of Life In Early Morning Fire Sunday in Rural Becker County

ROCHERT, MN—An early morning fire Sunday in rural Becker County claims the life of a toddler, and leaves other family members injured. The Becker County Sheriff’s Department says the report of a house fire on Duffney Road came in around 12:45am. Upon arrival the house, emergency responders found it was fully engulfed with one child unaccounted for.
According to the sheriff’s office, the initial investigation smoke alarms alerted children in the basement who got to the main floor and saw flames and went to alert other family members. A stairway leading to the upstairs bedrooms was blocked by flames. The children’s parents were able to exit through a second-floor window. The sheriff’s office said after learning a two-year old was unaccounted for the child’s father and older brother went back into the home to look for the child but were unable to find the boy due to the house being fully engulfed by flames. The child was later found deceased according to the sheriff’s office.
Three people were airlifted from the scene: an adult male was taken to a Fargo hospital for smoke inhalation and an adult female and five-year-old female were airlifted to a Minneapolis hospital for smoke inhalation and burns. The severity of their injuries were not known. The names are being withheld pending notification of family.
Firefighters from Callaway responded to the scene, along with fire department from Detroit Lakes, Frazee and Audubon assisting. St. Mary’s EMS, Detroit Lakes Police, MN State Patrol also assisted. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the scene.
